I’m just a guy that found a BBQ and got carried away. Well in a way… as a kid my dad build a brick BBQ in the back garden and I remember giving a small hand with a brick or two before I got bored. Once complete we had many barbecues. well when I say barbeques I mean sausages and burgers, on special occasions we had some chicken legs. As I got older and moved out the family home I got more and more interested and I think there has always been a BBQ in the garden of some type. I admit it… sometimes it was a gas grill. (shhhh don’t tell anyone else).
I think the obsession started once I was able to go on villa holidays, every villa we visited had a masonry BBQ and the supermarkets had meat. Sun, beer and BBQ all go hand in hand. In 2019 I got my first Weber and that changed everything, I could now cook Low and Slow, Grill or Roast. Since this point everything got a bit crazy. The meat got larger, The BBQ was out more and then LOCKDOWN! Yea covid turned up and the weather was nice. Luckily we was allowed out in our own gardens. The delivery driver would bring meat pop it on the doorstep he would walk away and I'll collect it and cook it. The BBQ was coming out a few times a week and every weekend.
In early 2022 I collected a used Weber Smokey Mountain from a local chap, he was a bigger BBQ nut than me, he had his own grill shack. Check him out on YouTube, Smokey Rebel is his name. Firstly his shack was so cool, it had a massive pellet grill in the centre with flags and other Texas BBQ décor.
Ohhh just go look at his YouTube channel, its fantastic.
Seeing that started my brain ticking! “if I had one, I could cook in any weather”, “no more seasonal restrictions”. Then the planning started, a good few CAD drawings and a lot of web browsing and I found a wooden hot tub gazebo kit, got it delivered and stuck it together. We had to modify it a little so it fit in my tight space and around the gutter but we got there. Then things got even more crazy, The wife’s brain started ticking, Over a good few drinks my American style BBQ shack had now turned in to a TIKI bar with a grill.
A lot of screws and wood and I had a wall build around the masonry BBQ. We had a few more drinks and then had items coming from eBay, Amazon and everywhere, I had a friend design a logo that the Mrs used her art ability to draw it on the front the masonry BBQ, OK I admit it… it looks good, I'm sure this story will continue but lets see where it ends up.....
So it turns out 4 grills don't fit within the small tiki hut, and having to move 1 out so i can get it become annoying. I had to start planting the seeds for expansion with the wife. I started with the route of we need a new house. after negotiations I eventually compromised with a 7m x 2m plot where the old shed was. Id call that a win!
After much planning and research a tree got chopped down, then a truck full of wood, Sand, stone and concrete turned up. The build started!
From what started as a cad image was now turning into a real building. over about 3 weeks of afterwork and weekends we had a structure. The wife even helped massively with the painting and protecting the wood as we built.
Think im proud that i did it. its massive. Not really build anything this big before... im a computer guy not a builder. well so far it hasn't fallen down lets see what happens in the winter.
I wonder how this will evolve....
